Art Journaling

I thought I’d try something a bit different and post a video, rather than writing my blog. I loved how immediate the creation of a video is, though I have to say, the upload took a ridiculous amount of time! As always I follow my usual mantra of being “perfectly Imperfect’ and all things considered, I think it turned out really well. Big thanks to Ben for overcoming those sneaky technical issues, that threaten to dampen (or tsunami) my enthusiasm!

Exhibition Gratitude

Tired and grateful are the two words that best describe me at the moment. I’ve climbed a personal mountain. I set myself the goal of putting my insecurities aside to create a collection of work and show it.  I hog tied and muzzled my internal critic and committed to the idea that being perfectly imperfect would be enough. I’ve learnt so much along the way. I’ve met kind, generous, talented people like Lynne Pearce at “That Framing Place” in Balmain and photographer Theresa at “Fine Art Imaging”  I’ve been overwhelmed by the love and support from friends, family and total strangers who made time to come to the exhibition, share a glass of wine, their thoughts and their money to encourage and celebrate my efforts. I appreciate every kind word more than you will ever know and I’m excited to continue creating as I’ve got lots of plans in the works! When In Rome

More exciting news! My painting ‘Embrace’ has been selected for a group exhibition, showcasing Australian artists to be held in Rome in November 2015. The exhibition is being organised by multi award winning artist and lovely man, Steve McLaren, who dedicates as much time to encouraging fellow artists as he does to his own prolific practice.

My Painting, ‘Embrace’ celebrates the transformation that occurs when we hold something or someone close. Not just a physical act, to truly embrace is an emotional and spiritual experience. To embrace a loved one, a way of life, an ideology and with that embrace to fully engage with the essence of life itself. In this painting, bursts of colour, natural forms and tendrils vie for the viewers’ attention, just as life’s endless distractions pull us in opposing directions. The figures merge and explode with colour and those same natural forms, a reminder that though the modern world would have us believe we are somehow separate and immune to nature, we are in fact intrinsically part of the vast ecosystem called earth. ‘Embrace’ reminds us of the joy of abandon, of surrender to another, or an ‘other’ and in embracing fully, we become part of something greater; more  than we could ever have been on our own.

The EmbraceSixteen other works of mine will accompany ‘Embrace’ in digital form, to be displayed as a slide show for prospective buyers at the gallery in Rome. Fingers crossed the Italians like an Aussie girl’s perspective of the world.

Fear V Love

I’ve been working hard since I last wrote here. I’m developing skills in photographing and the editing of my artwork, I’ve exhibited my work in several group shows, I’m making new friends with other artists for fun and collaboration, posting on social media, painting, attending workshops, you name it, I’ve been there, pushing, forcing myself into increasingly uncomfortable places, far from my comfort zone.

There always seems to be so much to do and with every step forward, more questions arise! With each new direction, or decision, fear and love my life long companions whisper in each ear, each one fighting to be heard, in an endless battle for supremacy. I know I’m not alone, all of us experience this battle. The further from our comfort zone we get, the louder fear becomes, whispering at first, then nagging like a shrew; “You can’t do it”……… You’re too old, young, fat, stupid, poor, whatever put down perfectly fits our personal repertoire of insecurities. Fear often has the loudest voice as it has shame, guilt and failure as allies, but if we listen closer, beneath fear’s undermining soundtrack, the sweet tones of love sing a different tune. The song of love resonates with our destiny, our greatest passions and desires. The song of love has truth, serendipity, miracles, magic and so much more as allies. The song of love resonates within our cells, harking back to a time when we were new and fearless, when life was a beautiful, safe adventure.
My commitment is to continue to look at opportunities and challenges and make my decisions based on love, not fear. Fear will undermine, doubt and be suspicious of adventure and opportunity, begging us to stay put, to not take risks, to be careful, to ultimately be less. On the other hand, decisions based on love feel exhilarating, like plunging into a cool stream! The energy feels expansive and exciting, still challenging, but somehow, just right.

I’ve got lots of work to put up on the website in a new gallery for 2015, but as I mentioned, there’s so much to do. I’m working on some products for sale and want to get a professional portfolio done for licencing designs and approaching galleries. It would all happen a lot faster, if I could just clone myself!  Anyway, I’ll pop a couple of images up with this post and check me out on instagram @emeljurd to see loads of my drawings and progress images of paintings as well as a few random shots of our new puppy Eddy. Good luck with your challenges and decisions and remember, love, not fear!

Exhibit

Good morning everyone! (or afternoon, or night)

I have a passion for creating, I’ve done it all my life, in private, in public murals, in work places facilitating groups, community projects, funded extravaganzas, you name it. I have a new creative goal, possibly my most ambitious and personally confronting, it is to exhibit my work. I’ve been actively searching out opportunities and have made it my mission to enter every group show and art prize I am able to, with a view to building up to a solo show.  I’m insecure like most artists, but have been diligently pushing past my insecurities and constantly challenging myself to learn more and get out there. So despite my fears, I exhibited two pieces in the ‘International Women’s Day’ Exhibition at Tap Gallery, in Darlinghurst. The two pieces posted below seemed to me to fit with the theme of International Womens Day best.  The first, ‘Loyalty’, is about the duality of loyalty. It is an incredibly admirable quality, but when exploited by another, can cause such deep pain, confusion and longing. The human figure inside the animal, alludes to a common trait, where we are loyal to others, patiently waiting for recognition, while abandoning our true, inner selves. The other painting, ‘Family Tree’ is an insight into my own childhood. High in our oak tree with my younger brother, I escaped the chaos below, embraced by her strong branches, I tracked the seasons, dreamed, read, gained perspective and felt safe. I can still see her lurid green spring leaves and feel the texture of her rough dark bark. I loved that tree.

It was a really fun opening and I really appreciate the friends and family who attended. For those of you who missed out, don’t worry, I plan to provide lots more opportunities and may at some stage personally harass you to come along! Lol.

I’ve also put three pieces into the ‘A4 Art Exhibition’, at the Herring Island Gallery, in Melbourne. All pieces in the exhibition are A4 size and all of them are for sale. There will be a huge variety of original work, from loads of talented artists, so if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, (or on any of the dates listed below) pop on down. I’ve attached the flyer with all the details below. The image turned out really small and distorts if I enlarge it, so I provided a screen shot, so you can read the details. It’s run by the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria, so if you want more details, check out their website at  www.contemporaryartsociety.org.au

Reflections

As you know,  I have started an informal collaboration with a writer on Instagram. He contacted me this week with a short story and asked if I was inspired, could provide a drawing. For Instagram purposes, his stories can only be 250 words long and I realise now, my drawings should be in a square format, or they will be cropped and lose details from one end. Fortunately the image is not hampered by these restrictions here on my website! Please enjoy ‘Reflections’ by @jcenno, illustrated by  @emeljurd check us out on instagram. Oh and I’m still working on my website and will be today, so it may look different, or a mess, depending on how much work I get done. Let me know if you like the collaboration idea and/or my new look website.

REFECTIONS.

The ornate mirror hung off the wall innocuously. It’s silver filigree of curves ran around its border like a river of mercury that never ended. I stood in the doorway watching Kristy wash her face. The white basin that stood before her caught her restless dreams and drank last night away.

She was the strongest woman I had ever known but today might be the day. As she padded her face with a small towel, her eyes peeked every now and then into the mirror. Eventually she slowly lowered her towel and stared at her reflection. As tears welled up in her eyes, her hands gripped the basin; a mixture of anger and sadness. The unbearable loss, I knew she was feeling, began to take its toll. The mirror silently reflecting her anguish.

Reflection

With sudden fury she threw a cup causing a rippling web of splinters and cracks across the mirror. Kristy crumpled to the floor sobbing.

I knelt down and gently wrapped my arms around her.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

I knew exactly what she was referring to but asked anyway. “For what? There’s nothing to apologise for. It was beyond your control.”

She knew exactly what I was referring to and didn’t need to elaborate. Instead she said, “I broke the mirror.”

I answered, “Reflecting on the past can make us stronger but there’s nothing wrong if it doesn’t.” I looked at the fractured shards falling in the basin and added, “Besides it’s just a mirror.”

Spring

Spring 24″ x 36″

I wanted to share this painting I recently finished called ‘Spring’. In it I wanted to express the intensity of spring, as Mother Nature bursts to life, exploding with colour and new growth in this fantastical garden of earth. It also represents a personal spring, when creativity suddenly bursts to life again after a period of emptiness. During the creative winter, art is perseverance, patience and work, waiting for the spark to once again ignite. Suddenly that creative spring arrives from nowhere and you ride that energy, sketch madly, paint every chance you can and scrawl notes in the dark as ideas bounce about keeping sleep at bay. I hope spring brings creative life to you all in whatever way is meaningful to you.

Creative Process

I’m so proud! I finally put up a brief overview of my career on the ‘About’ page. I found it really difficult to condense the last couple of decades into a few paragraphs and quite odd writing about myself in that way. I tend to be very productive in any area I commit myself to and I also tend to be involved in several things at once, so there was a lot to cover. I realised at the end I had skipped huge chunks of my story. Never mind, I think it’s good enough and I want to continue to practice what I preach and not procrastinate because I haven’t created the ‘perfect bio’.

In this post I want to write a little bit about my creative process. Firstly, I draw compulsively! It ranges from absentminded doodling on any surface available and unconscious drawing during meetings and any type of learning environment, through to drawings that are a final art piece if you like. I post a lot of my drawings on Instagram and have started to put a gallery of drawings together on this site. ( again, not perfectly) 🙂 The images that look like rough sketches are often the ones that I turn into paintings. They’re unfinished and are a shorthand of ideas that are enough to capture the essence and can be expanded on later with further drawings or developed on canvas.

I paint in two main ways. One that is intuitive, where I start without much of a concept and let the painting process evolve through layers of paint. The images come from the act of playing and working with the medium. Images appear from the canvas, to be refined and a mental dialogue occurs that directs the painting. It’s like an active meditation or a direct link to the subconscious. It’s fun and for the most part spontaneous, at least in the initial layers.

The other way I work is to use my drawings and sketches to inspire me. I might use elements from several sketches or simplify just one and create a painting from that. I am constantly reading and learning about whatever fascinates me at the time and these fascinations as well as life long themes become symbols and metaphors within my work. My paintings are my joy and my therapy, they make perfect sense to me and express things I don’t have words for. Though they are obviously personal, I hope that they can be enjoyed by others too and I don’t like to get to prescriptive with their meanings. Though I’m happy to provide their meaning to anyone who is interested. I think each person responds to a painting differently because of their own unique perspective and while some themes are really obvious to me, I enjoy and can be inspired by other people’s perspective of my work. In the end, If there is something in them that you can take away with you that somehow inspires, then that is enough, my work is done.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my site.

Transforming. A Life Long Journey

I started a new painting yesterday and as always, as I paint, I think. I got to thinking about the struggle to remain positive and focused in a world that bombards us all with images of horror and has a vested interest in selling us the lie that we are not enough, we don’t have enough.  “They” say we need to work harder, to be and have a whole lot more than we currently are and have, so possibly in a far off point, in a distant future, we can rest and “Be” as opposed to do ( read: buy, diet, nip, tuck, climb the ladder, live in a better suburb, bigger house, do Yoga, eat Paleo, Macro, Raw, Organic) So here’s the scoop, I’m not perfect and neither is anything or anyone. Lets set ourselves free for the real journey.

The point of this brief rant is that we can transform this sense of lack and less-than-ness. Instead of focusing on who you are not, be who you are. Be it till your muscles ache and your face hurts, till the tears stream down your face and your heart feels like it will explode, till you’re so far out on a limb you’re flapping in the breeze. Because when you do this, you will see all the other crazy dreamers and schemers smiling and waving from their limbs, laughing in the wind and staring down at the tiny ants of worry and what-if’s down below.

Till next time.

Growth Curves.

I know I haven’t posted anything for a couple of weeks, but I have been far from idle. Along with having the kids at home on school holidays, I have been on an exponential social media growth curve! I’ve signed up to Instagram, Pinterest and re activated my Facebook account. I’ve been drawing up a storm ( it’s easier to squeeze in, between sandwiches, arguments, HSC pep talks and loads of washing, than painting) I’ve also been posting the results on my new found social media platforms. I hope to create a drawing gallery here on my website in the next few days, so I can show a collection of my favourite drawings in one place.

IMG_0664-1.JPG

Finally and just as importantly, Leanne, my dear friend /business partner and I have launched our new business “Art Journeys” and have completed 2 concurrent, 7 week group programs called ” A Life Well Lived”
The workshops engaged clients between the ages of 40 and 93 (Amazing!!!!!) in creative and relaxation/ meditation exercises, designed to increase wellbeing, while having a lot of fun. Leanne and I were both so overwhelmed with the impact the program had on all the participants. They reported incredible benefits to their self-esteem, mental health and general sense of connectedness to life, each other and their creativity. Many new friendships blossomed and amazing work was created, both during classes and through the week as they worked on their ‘homework’.
Our intention was always to create a thoughtful, supportive and creative experience and I feel so privileged to have met such wonderful people and to have been able to share some of my time and skills with them. I am also humbled by the gift of achieving way more than we dreamed we could over the time we shared with each group.

Stay tuned for more news regrading “Art Journeys” and our “A Life Well Lived ” program as we now write reports and follow up on leads to provide the program to other organisations. Leanne and I also need to create another website specifically for ” Art Journeys”, but as it doesn’t exist yet, I couldn’t resist writing a little bit about it here.

The growth curve continues…….
